City and Colour

And now for something completely different. If this doesn’t support the notion that I have an eclectic taste in music, I don’t know what will. I hope it’s no secret that Alexisonfire is one of my favorite bands, and I’ve always felt their strongest attribute was their singer. So really, it was a no brainer to make the purchase when I found out Dallas had a side project. There really are very few singer/songwriter type albums that I own, but these two were well worth the purchase

Pelican

I honestly have no clue how I found Pelican. I’m assuming I found them through suggestions related to Isis, but it’s hard to keep track anymore. I do, however, remember cranking them in my living room after purchasing The Fire In Our Throats Will Beckon the Thaw and getting a positive reaction from my roommate who is notoriously over-critical of just about any music. Then again he’s grown to detest everything except Vivaldi and Bon Jovi for some reason… so the joke’s on him.

Relationship of Command | At the Drive-In

I’m not quite sure why it didn’t occur to me until today to bring up At the Drive-in. Granted, they split up quite some time ago, but that doesn’t mean their music wasn’t great. If for some reason the name doesn’t jog your memory, half of them went to Sparta and the other half went to The Mars Volta upon their split.

A Perfect Circle

I imagine this one goes out to a small percentage of our followers, but I’ve just got to get it out. I realize Mer de Noms broke a few records in terms of sales for a debut rock album, and Thirteenth Step did even better. However, I still come across people I’m certain would like them, but they haven’t because they’ve just assumed A Perfect Circle is some sort of extension of Tool. This is a false presumption.

S.U.S.A.R. | Indukti

S.U.S.A.R. - Suspected Unexpected Serious Adverse Reaction – at first it just sounds like a nonsensical and possibly contradictory phrase, but it’s actually a real medical term. It’s also an album by the Polish prog rock band Indukti; an album that I thought was good after the first listen, but after the subsequent few listens it just seemed to get better, and better, and better.

Video Interview | Riverside

We had the pleasure of interviewing Riverside’s lead singer, Mariusz Duda. Check out the video to learn a brief history of Riverside, insight into their creative processes, what separates them from the pack, and if/when they plan to take over the world.

Elf-Titled | The Advantage

I can understand a band covering a song in a manner that expresses the song in their own unique way or rearranges the song into a different genre, but typically I don’t condone bands that produce releases strictly of covers. However, I’ve come across an exception to the rule that both impresses and creates a sense of nostalgia. I’ve heard countless bands cover classic NES games, but not quite in the way The Advantage as tackled the concept.

Live at the Fillmore | Dredg

I’ve learned something over the past few months. It’s hard work searching for new good bands on your own. You can spend hours upon hours poking through various websites or music services and not find something you’d even consider stealing. Of course, I’ve had a few success stories starting out just like that. But doesn’t feel great when your friends do the work for you? Hopefully that’s us in your case… but Nirav and I actually have friends too.

Holographic Universe | Scar Symmetry

It’s been a long while since I posted on some heavy metal. Metal really does dominate my music library, and seems I’m not justly representing that statement. I guess I just didn’t want to overwhelm Nirav with too much screaming and speed guitar. I recently came across Scar Symmetry from another music aficionado at school. Between his recommendation and two whole 30-second clips… the purchase was already made.

Street Signs | Ozomatli

Using over three languages to compose their verses and stanzas, Ozomatli sounds like an international band and rap group. But they are actually from our good ol’ state of California. The 10-piece band, composed of multi ethnic members, use their family cultures and languages to compose their music. Ozomatli to me is the best collaboration of rock, hip hop, jazz, funk, and salsa that I’ve ever heard in my life. And I’m generally not a fan when an artist even tries to mix 2 genres. If only latin influenced music sounded more like Ozomatli instead of reggaeton, how different would the world be?!?
