Anyone who knows me, knows that I have an unhealthy obsession with a little place I like to call NYC. That obsession just sky-rocketed. Today, I fell in love with the NYC jazz scene. How could I have been missing out on this for so long? The band that triggered this notion was The Avishai Cohen Trio… absolutely incredible. Gently Disturbed is the kind of album that makes me wish I could write jazz.
You’re either going to love or hate this band. The Mars Volta is on a fine line where the music snob is likely to say they’re too commercial and structured, while the common listener is likely to say they’re too unconventional and off the wall. I think their music near blissful and they’ve got just the right amount of experimental in the mix.
For some reason Porcupine Tree seems to be only known to the music elitists, and not even all of them. They are one of the few bands out there that have managed to blend superb composition with accessibility and top notch recordings. In Absentia (2002) is widely regarded as Porcupine Tree’s masterpiece and belongs in the library of any self-respecting obnoxious listener.
If there’s one thing I’m good at, it’s finding good bands after they’ve broken up. Maybe the majority of Americans don’t like good music, or maybe I’m just slow to catch on to things. Mad at Gravity’s story goes something like that described in my last post on Pulse Ultra. Good band, wrong exposure, no more band. But that doesn’t mean you have to miss out on them completely.
Opeth released a new album on June 3rd entitled Watershed (2008). And let me tell you, it is one of the strongest rock/metal albums I’ve heard in a very long time. I will even go as far as to say since the release of 10,000 Days by Tool. Their latest single entitled “Porcelain Heart” summarizes the depth.
A newcomer to my ears, 10 Years, has put out two amazing albums entitled Division (2008) and The Autumn Effect (2005) that I’ve had a chance to hear. Both albums are play from start to end type of music. I’ve probably listened to each over 50 times and never did I pick a single and move away. And you’re damn sure that after listening to an album that many times, I remember every change in beat and every word of their lyrics. I’m so glad their lyrics are actually quality and conscious!
Remember when I said you don’t listen to enough Jazz. Then I reminded you that it was true. Well, it is true, I did say that, and you still don’t listen to enough jazz. I’ve got another jazz band that everyone should check out. The Bad Plus is a three piece band consisting of a piano, upright bass, and one hell of a drummer.
Our first set of music videos focus on a band from Ireland that goes by the name of God Is An Astronaut. We started listening to them about 9 months back when they released their latest album Far From Refuge (2007). They are an amazing instrumental-only band which you can jam out to without ever feeling the need for lyrics. I love bands like that. Though lyrics wouldn’t hurt, they can do without them and still produce quality music.
Just when I thought my only source of new good progressive rock was Porcupine Tree and potentially another album from Tool in the next five years if we’re lucky… I came across Riverside. If you like Dream Theater, Porcupine Tree, Tool, and/or Opeth, then Riverside deserves your attention.
Porcupine Tree is one those bands that has managed to keep under the radar for nearly 20 years. I don’t know how they did it. I’m actually kind of impressed. Especially since they’ve had guest musicians like Robert Fripp (King Crimson) and Mikael Ã…kerfeld (Opeth). If you don’t know who King Crimson is then you probably weren’t aware that progessive rock has been around since their first album in 1969. If you’ve never heard of Opeth, I’ll let it slide… for now.
