Kekal
Free album downloads are available from this Avant-garde metal group from Jakarta, Indonesia!
Spirit | Apse
If I had to explain Spirit in one sentence, I’d say it’s a dark, atmospheric, and experimental post-rock album. It has a tribal feel at times, and the vocals are used as an additional feature to the overall sound rather than the primary source of the melody, as many post-rock groups are prone to. Other adjectives I think perfectly describe this album are: haunting, creepy, spacey, and weird.
Idmen | Indukti
Indukti wastes no time grabbing the listener’s full attention in this album, and they continue to develop their dark, haunting sound and wide range of influences from around the globe.
Give | The Bad Plus
Give features some key differences with their previously reviewed albums… and it’s also my favorite TBP album I’ve heard thus far.
Melon
I suppose you could call Melon stoner rock or sludge, but there’s just too much going on to pigeon hole these guys. They’re certainly Obnoxious Listeners and have an even wider range of musical tastes than myself. There are very few people I’ve met that know more bands than me and also typically knows every band I throw at them. Melon has a couple members that fit this description, so you can imagine how wide the influences are for the band.
All Seeing Eye | Klone
If one believes there’s such a genre as art rock, then surely there is something along the lines of art metal. I recently came across another metal band from France that would fit such a preposterous description. Klone is a peculiar mixture of mainstream rock, hard rock, death metal, experimental rock, jazz, and crazy. Whomever runs their MySpace page must have found me since I friended Demians given that they found me shortly after finding Demians and they’re both from France. Although Klone does have a few moments when the two bands could be easily compared, that’s about the extent of the connection between the two bands.
Lunatic Soul
Let’s get something straight. I don’t have a man-crush on Mariusz Duda per se… I mean, yes, I happen to love every album he’s had a hand in. And yes, I did travel 10 hrs each way to meet him at Riverside’s first non-feastival show in the US. And so what, I would have made that travel for just the show. You can also ignore the fact that I was practically speechless during our interview with Mariusz.
Relationship of Command | At the Drive-In
I’m not quite sure why it didn’t occur to me until today to bring up At the Drive-in. Granted, they split up quite some time ago, but that doesn’t mean their music wasn’t great. If for some reason the name doesn’t jog your memory, half of them went to Sparta and the other half went to The Mars Volta upon their split.
Escape/Restart | Radius System
I came across Radius System only a few months ago. Their album caught my eye again today, I listened to it twice, and got the inspiration to spread the good news. As I do for all my posts, I check out the band’s website and do a little bit of research… but poignant only vaguely describes the feeling I get when I remember that making great music isn’t enough to keep the dream alive. As of August 27th, 2008, Radius system announced the project is over. They’re offering their album as a free download… get it while you still can!
Buck Fever | Estradasphere
WARNING: Estradasphere is not for the faint of heart and is for Obnoxious Listeners only. This band crosses and mixes more genres than any other I know. One song could start out with some of the most non-sensical, heaviest metal you’ve heard and smoothly transition to a classical jazz piece followed by Icelandic salsa. Ok, I made that last genre up. But it’s no exaggeration when I say Estradasphere is the most unique band I’ve yet posted on. To the common listener, this music may be immediately brushed off as silly or a joke, but to a musician or Obnoxious Listener who understands the purpose behind it… they just might see pure brilliance.
