Post-rock. What exactly does that mean? I’ve tagged a few artists with said genre, but really that’s just to make it easier to find. I have a problem with labeling bands as post-rock. That’s like making good rock it’s own genre. To me, post-rock is just where rock has developed over the past decade or so, but unfortunately this generic name has been defined by a not so generic sound… though it still has its gray boundaries. I guess I’m wondering what will come next, post-modern rock? My bickering of poorly named genres aside, I happen to really like the so-called post-rock genre. I’ve come across one band in particular that has managed to distinguish itself from the pack and isn’t particularly all that well known.
Maserati is another of those bands I came across in my days working at Apple. A working environment like that is just packed full of others into music like me, and it was a great way to find new obscure bands. Maserati has been releasing albums for the past 8 years or so, but they still seem to have a relatively small following. Usually only the big music buffs know of them. So far I only have The Language of Cities (2002) and Inventions for the New Season (2007). Both are great releases, but I really like where the band is heading with their latest release.
They are an instrumental four piece consisting of two guitars, a bass guitar, and of course drums. Their music is usually very chill and relaxing with a couple faster paced tracks. By Inventions for the New Season they had really developed a sound for themselves. I definitely like it better, but both albums are very good. Unfortunately, they really do have a niche audience and may require some other gateway bands of this sort of genre to break in a new listener. One thing to keep in mind that their music is often about build-ups. So you’ve gotta give it a good listen and a 30-second clip won’t likely be enough to get you hooked.
