Danger Invites Rescue

Update (Mike’s experience seeing them live):

I had the pleasure of experiencing Danger’s live show last night, and first I’ll just get the simple and obvious out of the way – they have a polished sound. The transitions were crisp, interplay between the guitars was well executed, and everything that was supposed to be rhythmically in unison was in fact synched. Additionally, the performance had a nice flow; I think they only actually stopped playing once during the almost 40-minute set. As a more subtle observation, I was impressed with the multitasking skills of the band members, particularly the bass player. At times he would use a loop machine so there’d still be a bass line while he played a random percussion instrument – or the trumpet – or added other miscellaneous sound effects. On at least one occasion, he played a different bass line on top of the looped one to add further depth to the sound, which I thought was pretty cool. Both of the guitarists also played assorted percussion instruments at one point or another.

The sole item I noticed that the band could address to improve their sound is dynamics. For the most part, they seemed to have two volumes: loud and not loud. It’d be nice to see them utilize the full spectrum, maybe mix in some slow build-ups and fade-outs with the always-effective volume jumps. Now dynamics usually begin with the drummer, but in his defense, he wasn’t miked for this performance (it was a pretty small room), and as such, he was kinda forced to play loudly to get a decent kick from the bass drum. As a somewhat random note, I spoke with one of the guitarists, David, and his girlfriend Marina for a little while, and they were both way cool. David mentioned that the band is playing a couple benefit shows for good causes in the coming months (I don’t quite remember what they were though, one was for leukemia maybe?), and that’s always good to hear. After all, music isn’t the most important thing in this world… it’s probably just second or third.

It’s no secret, I’ve clearly got a fetish for progressive/post-rock/metal or whatever us kids are calling it these days. Isis, Pelican, Del Rey, and Russian Circles are among my favorites… but these guys are all pretty well known at this point (some more than others obviously). I’ve recently found (well, actually they found me) another band among this genre that brings a fresh look. From what I can tell, they’re still up and coming, so it’s likely you don’t know them just yet.

Danger Invites Rescue somehow came across my personal myspace music page. I’m not entirely sure if they found me just looking for new music and thought I’d dig their music or if I’m just within a couple degrees of separation within this whole myspace world. Regardless, I received a message from them saying they’re offering free downloads of their EP. How could I resist? Danger Invites Rescue is an instrumental four piece post-rock/metal band residing in Los Angeles. The free EP download certainly got my attention initially, but it was their unique sound and careful attention to composition that kept it.

The recording itself isn’t spectacular, but in the grand scheme of things it’s really not that bad. Then considering these guys are passionate enough about their music to get it out to you for free, it’s a no-brainer. The recording is clean, but it just doesn’t have the umph you get out of a high-end studio. Honestly, I’m not so sure it’s the recording that is the issue so much as the producing/mixing. These are all just minor faults in my opinion. What’s important is the music itself. If you’ve had any interest in the aforementioned bands, you have no reason not to download their EP via the link below.
