Pelican

I honestly have no clue how I found Pelican. I’m assuming I found them through suggestions related to Isis, but it’s hard to keep track anymore. I do, however, remember cranking them in my living room after purchasing The Fire In Our Throats Will Beckon the Thaw and getting a positive reaction from my roommate who is notoriously over-critical of just about any music. Then again he’s grown to detest everything except Vivaldi and Bon Jovi for some reason… so the joke’s on him.

Relationship of Command | At the Drive-In

I’m not quite sure why it didn’t occur to me until today to bring up At the Drive-in. Granted, they split up quite some time ago, but that doesn’t mean their music wasn’t great. If for some reason the name doesn’t jog your memory, half of them went to Sparta and the other half went to The Mars Volta upon their split.

A Perfect Circle

I imagine this one goes out to a small percentage of our followers, but I’ve just got to get it out. I realize Mer de Noms broke a few records in terms of sales for a debut rock album, and Thirteenth Step did even better. However, I still come across people I’m certain would like them, but they haven’t because they’ve just assumed A Perfect Circle is some sort of extension of Tool. This is a false presumption.

Elf-Titled | The Advantage

I can understand a band covering a song in a manner that expresses the song in their own unique way or rearranges the song into a different genre, but typically I don’t condone bands that produce releases strictly of covers. However, I’ve come across an exception to the rule that both impresses and creates a sense of nostalgia. I’ve heard countless bands cover classic NES games, but not quite in the way The Advantage as tackled the concept.

Live at the Fillmore | Dredg

I’ve learned something over the past few months. It’s hard work searching for new good bands on your own. You can spend hours upon hours poking through various websites or music services and not find something you’d even consider stealing. Of course, I’ve had a few success stories starting out just like that. But doesn’t feel great when your friends do the work for you? Hopefully that’s us in your case… but Nirav and I actually have friends too.
