S.U.S.A.R. - Suspected Unexpected Serious Adverse Reaction - at first it just sounds like a nonsensical and possibly contradictory phrase, but it’s actually a real medical term. It’s also an album by the Polish prog rock band Indukti; an album I thought was good after the first listen, but after the subsequent few listens it just seemed to get better, and better, and better.

Indukti is made up of a drummer, bassist, two guitars, and a violinist. As an added bonus on this album, they utilize a harp for the intro, outro, and some transitions for a cool, heavenly or dream-like effect. On their MySpace page, the first three musical influences they mention are King Crimson, Tool, and Radiohead. It’s almost too easy to compare them with Riverside as well, but mainly because they’re both excellent forward-thinking bands from Poland, and Riverside’s singer even offers his vocals for a few of the songs on S.U.S.A.R.

I’ve mentioned before that classical string instruments are perfectly equipped for creating tension and suspension, and it’s no different in this case. Additionally, since this album has an overall dark and heavy post-metal tone, the violin often provides a shimmer of light that contrasts with the rest of the band. The music tends to unfold deliberately, and there’s plenty of odd-metered time to occupy yourself with. Overall, I’d say S.U.S.A.R. is most definitely worth checking out if you like Tool, and Riverside’s heavier stuff, but would like something with a different and more exotic flavor. Also keep in mind this is merely Indukti’s freshman effort, so it’ll be interesting to see how they evolve for their next release and beyond.
