If up to this point Indukti has continued to fly below your radar, I suggest checking out my review of their debut album and our interview with Ewa, their violinist. One thing you might notice about my previous review is that it’s pretty short; in fact, it’s the shortest review I’ve written. For some reason I find it difficult to describe this band in words. I think that’s a good thing for Indukti because it’s a testament to their uniqueness, but it’s incredibly frustrating for me because I like them so much yet feel I fail at construing their greatness to others.
On Idmen (2009), Indukti bears passing similarities to artists like Isis, Tool, and even Lunatic Soul at times, but they really are entirely their own beast. This album has more of a variety in sound than their debut I think, but part of the reason for this is that three different vocalists were used this time instead of just Mariusz Duda. Simultaneously though, S.U.S.A.R. (2005) exudes a more natural flow, and for this reason I’d probably recommend it for first-time listeners. This doesn’t necessarily mean I like it more than Idmen though; I’m actually not sure which I think is better, but it really doesn’t matter since each one is unique and awesome in its own right.
Unlike their debut, Idmen wastes no time grabbing the listener’s full attention. This album is noticeably heavier, both instrumentally and vocally, than S.U.S.A.R. What absolutely remains though is the band’s dark, haunting sound and wide range of influences from around the globe. And they again manage to incorporate instruments you wouldn’t expect to hear from a metal band, like the dulcimer and trumpet. One thing that first struck me about Idmen was the drumming… which is phenomenal in my opinion. I tried to capture this in the second audio clip I chose. The first one shows off their use of the trumpet.
Idmen will be officially released by InsideOut Music in Europe on July 27 and in North America on August 11. Obnoxious Listeners was fortunate enough to get an advance promo copy, and we’re more than happy to drum up excitement in the coming weeks!
