I came across Radius System only a few months ago. Their album caught my eye again today, I listened to it twice, and got the inspiration to spread the good news. As I do for all my posts, I checked out the band’s website and did a little research… but poignant only vaguely describes the feeling I get when I remember that making great music isn’t enough to keep the dream alive. As of August 27th, 2008, Radius system announced the project is over. But they are still offering their album as a free download… get it while you still can!

I will be shocked if any of our readers have heard of these guys. I only know them because they sent me a MySpace friend request. Not sure how they found my music, but they did. And subsequently I found theirs. Honestly, how many rock bands do you know local to Paris, France? I’m not quite sure how to place their sound. I just hear way too many influences to really nail it down. I’d like to say I hear APC, Tool, Deftones, and even some Silverchair. But really it’s only pieces of those bands mixed with some math-rock, experimental, and a dash of electronica. I know I keep harping on the EQ spectrum, but this recording has a really full sound. You need to crank this album to really appreciate it. Really… really good dynamics.

Some bands write music to wow and impress its audience with essentially speed and flash. But the really good ones write the music to move you. More bands need to spend time really developing their own unique sound and using that to its full potential. Radius system understood that I think. I wish they had come across more opportunities to continue doing what they’ve been doing because these guys were really on the right track. But that’s how the music industry goes, and sadly, we’ll never hear the best of what’s out there. That’s why you can’t rely on good music just happening to cross paths with you. Do your part, look for it. And don’t pass up the chance for great, free music.
