If his music played in elevators, I might actually go out and get myself a job. Boney James has made jazz and the saxophone totally cool again. It’s soothing, its hip, and really goes well with hip hop and soul music! I love when jazz reaches into other genres and boundaries like when I found in jazz guitarist Ronny Jordan playing alongside Mos Def.

I was introduced to Boney James and his music when I heard his saxophone on other artists’ tracks, specifically hip hop and soul artists like Faith Evans, Dwele, Esthero, and Bilal. At first I thought it was just part of the background music/beat that was prerecorded and sung over. And then I listened a little more closely and realized that this was an actual studio recording with live instruments. I love when quality artists take that extra step from samples to live music!

Boney James has two great albums which I’ve purchased a few songs from. They are Pure (2004), Seduction (2006), and Shine (1995). He’s put out over 11 full length albums and has collaborated with many artists along the path. I would suggest you start with the newer albums and work your way back.

Just a little bit of background. Boney was born in Lowell, Massachusetts (Dan’s current residence). It’s a very industrial style town, all textile mills back in the day. I’m sure Dan will tell you how you can find musical inspiration from such places!
