Red Album by Baroness was actually named Album of the Year by Revolver magazine in their November 2007 issue. Not only that, they’re touring with Opeth throughout this October. So why haven’t you heard of them? Beats me. But that’ll change soon… real soon.
Nas’s recent release of his utitled album brings back memories of Illmatic (1994). He’s calm, he’s succinct, and he’s talking about things personal to him. With simple beats and a purpose to his lyrics, Nas shines though on this album. I love it when a veteran emcee like Nas comes back to the table to talk about real topics (media, government, music game, imprisonment, etc.) and how it relates to him personally.

My list of punk/indie bands in my music library is admittedly very short. Perhaps it’s because that sort of music is typically more about the message than the music that comes along with it, but every now and then I come across a band that goes against the grain. Open Hand struck me particularly because of the guitar work and intricate drums, and their singer… actually sings.
De La Soul’s most recent album is a great collaboration of their old school emcee style with new school soulful beats. I find it to be great chillen’ and drivin’ music. But on top of just that, this album really helps music lovers like me appreciate their true skills by giving me a gateway into their music. The gateway being soulful choruses from Glen Lewis and Carl Thomas and emcee collaborations with Common and MF Doom.

Anyone who knows me, knows that I have an unhealthy obsession with a little place I like to call NYC. That obsession just sky-rocketed. Today, I fell in love with the NYC jazz scene. How could I have been missing out on this for so long? The band that triggered this notion was The Avishai Cohen Trio… absolutely incredible. Gently Disturbed is the kind of album that makes me wish I could write jazz.
New Radiohead Video is Shot with Lasers, Not Cameras
here are some artists who keep it conscious with their lyrics about random thoughts and ideas. And then there are artists who keep it conscious and tell a full story. If you have heard of ‘I Used To Love Her’ by Common Sense, then you’ll see what I’m getting at. But what happens when you keep it conscious, tell a story, and then have the story be so empowering that it starts a real movement?
